Towards Intelligent Existence

A Reflection on Perception, Reality, and Evolution of Intelligence

 

In today’s world, influenced by the rise of computers and Artificial Intelligence, the word “intelligence” has gained extraordinary exposure, making it very prominent and significant. It frequently appears in discussions and dominates dialogues on technological advancements. It even infiltrates conversations about ethics and humanity’s future. This usage, however, has nothing to do with its usage when used to call espionage agencies ‘Intelligence agencies’ and their gathering of information ‘gathering intel’ {short for intelligence}.

 

Reflecting on this, I recognize that I’ve always experienced a unique love-hate relationship with this word. In me, the word has always evoked a complex, almost paradoxical relationship that intertwines personal experiences, societal constructs, and evolving definitions.

 

As a school-going child, I was often labeled as “intelligent.” My consistent rankings among the top three students earned me praise from teachers and peers alike. On the surface, this was a badge of honor. Beneath it, however, lay an often unacknowledged struggle. While subjects like mathematics, physics, and chemistry came naturally, requiring only conceptual understanding and logical application, the rote memorization of historical dates and geographical facts often left me anxious. Yet, I managed to uphold the image of the “intelligent one”—a role I was both proud of and apprehensive about losing. Deep down, I knew the word “intelligent” was complex. Offten I wondered: What does it truly mean to be intelligent? Am I intelligent?

 

This internal inquiry receded into the background as I grew older. It resurfaced during the late 1960s when IQ (Intelligence Quotient) became a buzzword across university campuses in the United States and a few other countries. The quantification of intelligence transformed into a cultural trend. Soon, it became clear that Intelligence was a benchmark of academic excellence. During this era, high IQ scores became synonymous with intellectual superiority. Individuals with exceptional scores were celebrated almost like celebrities. Yet, as the admiration for IQ reached its zenith, counterarguments emerged. 

 

Educationists and psychologists questioned the single-number depiction of intelligence. They proposed more nuanced theories and definitions. This dichotomy—a society enamored by quantifiable intelligence and a growing awareness of its limitations—has remained a central theme in my reflections on intelligence. 

 

I could not reconcile to the idea that proficiency solely in academic pursuits can determine Intelligence. I always thought intelligence had to be more than excellence in academic learning.

 

Throughout history, intelligence has been a cornerstone of human progress and identity. In ancient civilizations, intelligence was not merely defined by cognitive ability but by its application in daily life and society. For example, Greek, philosophers like Plato and Aristotle conceptualized intelligence as the capacity to reason and discern truth. This intellectual tradition valued logical reasoning and abstract thought, often associating intelligence with moral virtue. Aristotle, in particular, emphasized phronesis—practical wisdom—as an essential component of intelligence, highlighting the importance of applying knowledge for the greater good.  

 

In Eastern cultures, intelligence took on a more holistic and collective dimension. Ancient Chinese philosophy, influenced by Confucianism, emphasized *chi* (wisdom), and harbored understanding, moral discernment, and interpersonal harmony. Similarly, Indian traditions like Vedanta linked intelligence with spiritual insight and self-realization. Here, intelligence was not merely a tool for solving problems but a means of achieving balance and inner peace.

 

Intelligence is often viewed as a measure of someone’s learning potential, but it’s more complex than any simple metric. Intelligence itself can be seen as a multi-layered construct. It reflects the many ways in which humans understand, adapt, and interact with the world.

 

Intelligence is learning, adapting, and making meaning from our experiences. It’s not limited to academic ability or problem-solving skills; it encompasses a wide range of competencies that enable us to navigate life’s challenges, connect with others, and pursue our ambitions. In recent years, psychologists and educators have proposed that intelligence is not a single, monolithic trait but a collection of multiple intelligences. 

 

Thus as societies evolved, so did the interpretation of intelligence. The Enlightenment era in Europe introduced a rationalist perspective, associating intelligence with scientific inquiry and empirical reasoning. The Industrial Revolution further shaped this narrative, prioritizing technical knowledge and efficiency. This era laid the foundation for modern education systems and standardized metrics for assessing intelligence. This would culminate in the advent of IQ testing in the early 20th century.

 

The concept of measuring intelligence took root in the late 19th century. Inspired by Darwinian principles, Sir Francis Galton sought to quantify human ability. Galton’s work led to the development of the first rudimentary tests. Subsequently, French psychologist,  Alfred Binet, created the first practical intelligence test in 1905. Binet’s intent was pragmatic: to identify children needing additional educational support. However, when Lewis Terman adapted Binet’s test into the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale, IQ became a universal metric for intellectual assessment.

 

 

By the mid-20th century, IQ testing had gained widespread popularity. It influenced education, recruitment, and immigration policies. High IQ scores were equated with potential for success. Individuals with exceptional scores were celebrated as intellectual prodigies. However, this reliance on IQ faced increasing criticism.  

 

 

One major critique was the inherent cultural bias in IQ tests. Assessments based on IQ tests reflected the values and experiences of Western societies. It marginalized individuals from other cultural backgrounds. Furthermore, psychologists like David Wechsler argued that intelligence was too multifaceted to be captured by a single score. He introduced the concept of performance-based testing, highlighting abilities such as problem-solving and adaptability.

 

 

The limitations of IQ paved the way for alternative theories of intelligence, challenging the notion that cognitive ability could be reduced to a single metric.

 

 

Intelligence is one of the most complex and debated human traits. It encompasses a variety of cognitive abilities that contribute to learning, problem-solving, and adaptation. Its measurement through tests like the Intelligence Quotient (IQ) has evolved significantly, reflecting our growing understanding of human cognition. On the other hand, intelligence testing has also raised ethical concerns, particularly in the context of its misuse in eugenics and selective social policies. 

 

 

The pioneer of measuring cognitive ability, psychologist Charles Spearman proposed that intelligence was a single, general cognitive {relating to or involving the processes of thinking and reasoning} ability It was referred to as “g”. He argued that a general intelligence factor underlies various cognitive skills, meaning that people who perform well in one domain are likely to perform well in others.

 

Howard Gardner challenged this view with his theory of Multiple Intelligences. Similarly, Robert Sternberg’s Triarchic Theory of Intelligence emphasized analytical, creative, and practical intelligence as crucial components. These perspectives have expanded our understanding of intelligence, suggesting intelligence is a multi-faceted and culturally influenced trait rather than a fixed, singular ability.

 

Multiple Intelligences: A New Paradigm

 

In 1983 psychologist Howard Gardner proposed the theory of multiple intelligences. His theory caused a major shift in the understanding and measurement of IQ. Gardner argued that intelligence is not a single, measurable entity but a constellation of abilities that vary from person to person. His model identified at least eight distinct types of intelligence:

 

  1. Linguistic Intelligence: Sensitivity to the meaning and structure of language.
  2. Logical-Mathematical Intelligence: Aptitude for logical reasoning and problem-solving.
  3. Musical Intelligence: Recognition and creation of musical patterns.
  4. Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence: Proficiency in using one’s body to express ideas or solve problems.
  5. Spatial Intelligence: Ability to visualize and manipulate spatial configurations.
  6. Interpersonal Intelligence: Capacity to understand and interact effectively with others.
  7. Intrapersonal Intelligence: Deep self-awareness and introspection.
  8. Naturalistic Intelligence: Sensitivity to natural and environmental patterns.

 

 

This theory revolutionized education and human development, emphasizing the importance of nurturing varied talents. For instance, a child struggling with math might excel in music or sports, challenging the traditional focus on academic achievement as the sole indicator of intelligence.

 

 

Gardner’s work resonated deeply with me. It explained why my strengths in logic and problem-solving could coexist with my struggles in rote memorization. It validated that intelligence is diverse and multifaceted, defying simplistic categorization.

 

 

Emotional Intelligence: The Missing Ingredient

 

 

Another transformative idea that emerged parallel to Gardner’s work is emotional intelligence (EI). Popularized by psychologist Daniel Goleman in the 1990s, emotional intelligence refers to the ability to recognize, understand, and manage emotions—both one’s own and those of others. Goleman’s framework emphasized five key components:

 

  1. Self-awareness
  2. Self-regulation
  3. Motivation
  4. Empathy
  5. Social skills

 

 

EI challenged the traditional IQ-centric model, demonstrating that emotional awareness and interpersonal skills are as vital as cognitive abilities in achieving personal and professional success. Today, EI is recognized as a critical component of leadership and team dynamics, often valued more highly than IQ in the workplace.

 

 

The Need to Measure Intelligence

 

 

The need to measure intelligence arose from a desire to understand and quantify cognitive abilities for educational placement, job selection, and intellectual disabilities. Early researchers, such as Alfred Binet and Theodore Simon in France, developed one of the first intelligence tests in the early 20th century. This test was intended to help schools identify students who required special education to succeed academically. Binet’s purpose was pragmatic rather than absolute; he viewed intelligence as something that could be nurtured and developed and not a fixed trait.

 

 

Over time, intelligence testing became an essential tool for psychologists, educators, and employers. By quantifying cognitive abilities, IQ tests aimed to provide objective data on mental aptitude. This data has proven valuable for numerous purposes. It has helped in identifying gifted individuals, diagnosing learning disabilities, assessing cognitive impairment, and researching human development. Intelligence tests have informed decisions on school placement, job assignments, and social services, making them a key part of modern educational and psychological practice.

 

 

The Evolution of the Intelligence Quotient (IQ)

 

 

The Intelligence Quotient, or IQ, originated from Binet’s intelligence test but was later refined by others, including Lewis Terman, who adapted the test for American use. The term “IQ” was popularized by German psychologist William Stern, who proposed a formula to calculate IQ as a ratio of mental age {Mental Age (MA) Is a numerical scale unit derived by dividing an individual’s results in an intelligence test by the average score for other people of the same age. Thus, a 4-year-old child who scored 150 on an IQ test would have a mental age of 6 (the age-appropriate average score is 100; therefore, MA = (150/100) × 4 = 6). The MA measure of performance is not effective beyond the age of 14.} to chronological age, multiplied by 100. This formula was useful for measuring intelligence in children, as it provided a relative score based on developmental expectations for specific age groups.

 

Over time, IQ testing methods evolved and became more sophisticated. Standardized tests like the Stanford-Binet and Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) became prominent. These tests incorporated subtests to measure specific cognitive abilities rather than a single score. Today, IQ scores are based on statistical norms, with an average IQ score set at 100. Modern IQ tests assess various cognitive domains, such as verbal comprehension, working memory, perceptual reasoning, and processing speed, offering a more comprehensive view of human abilities.

 

 

Misuse of IQ Testing in Selective Eugenics

 

 

While IQ testing has provided valuable insights, it has also been misused, particularly in the context of selective eugenics. In the early 20th century, eugenics—a movement that aimed to improve the genetic quality of human populations—used IQ tests to justify discriminatory practices. Proponents of eugenics argued that individuals with lower IQ scores should be prevented from reproducing, as they believed that low intelligence was hereditary and posed a threat to society’s overall quality. This perspective led to forced sterilizations, restrictive immigration laws, and social policies that discriminated against individuals and groups deemed “intellectually inferior.”

 

 

This misuse of IQ testing was unethical and also based on flawed assumptions about the nature of intelligence. Intelligence is influenced by various environmental factors, such as socioeconomic status, education, and nutrition which can impact IQ scores. Additionally, the cultural bias of early intelligence tests skewed results against minority and immigrant groups, further fueling discriminatory policies. The misuse of IQ in eugenics highlights the dangers of assuming that intelligence is a fixed, purely genetic trait and using it as a basis for exclusionary practices.

 

 

There is a story that did the rounds when the movie Forest Gump was released…it was then said that Forest Gump, because of his low IQ was a victim of discrimination. He was one of Macnamara’s Morons.

MacNamara’s Morons were a unit of low IQ and mentally handicapped US troops that were recruited as an experiment. Casualty rates were high among these troops due to a lack of situational awareness and their mental handicaps. Gump had an IQ of 75 which probably wouldn’t be enough to make it into a conventional US Army or Marine Corps unit.

Also, Bubba {a friend of Forest in the unit} probably had a similar handicap, since he talked and acted in a demeanor identical to Forest.

From what we see of Gump in action, he doesn’t fight much and probably didn’t know where the NVA were due to a lack of situational awareness. He fires 2 or 3 shots in the general direction and runs in the opposite direction because of something he was told beforehand (“Run Forest run!”).

 

However, Forest Gump comes across as highly competent at whatever he sets out to do. Certainly, he is slow in speech and to some extent in thought, but he excels at nearly everything he undertakes. Ably holding down roles as distinct as a boots-on-the-ground soldier in a particularly horrid war (winning the Medal of Honor) and a supreme ping pong player in China, a ping pong playing powerhouse.

He puts the savant in the idiot savant as the old and now politically incorrect saying goes.

This was before our broader understanding of the range of our cognitive abilities and skills. In 983 Howard Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences was proved correct by Forest Gump the man with a low IQ and one of Macnamara’s Morons!  

 

Defining Intelligence

It is not easy to define intelligence. A functional and accepted definition of intelligence is the ability to acquire knowledge, reason, solve problems, and adapt to new situations. However, this definition varies among scholars, psychologists, and theorists. 

 

 

Various theories have made it hard to define intelligence. Conventionally, most theories agree that intelligence involves the ability to:

{a} understand complex ideas, 

{b} adapt effectively to new situations, 

{c} learn from experience, 

{d} and engage in abstract reasoning. 

 

 

These skills are not solely limited to academic environments but also apply to practical problem-solving in daily life. Nevertheless, intelligence remains difficult to measure comprehensively because it is influenced by genetic, environmental, cultural, and social factors.

 

 Intelligence in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

 

The conversation about intelligence has now taken yet another turn.

 To the extent that recorded history goes, we can assume that one of the most spectacular developments during the 13.8 billion years since our Big Bang is that dumb and lifeless matter has turned intelligent. How could this happen and how much smarter can things get in the future? What does science have to say about the history and fate of intelligence in our cosmos? What are the foundations and fundamental building blocks of intelligence? What does it mean to say that a blob of matter is intelligent? What does it mean to say an object can remember, compute, and learn? So what exactly is Intelligence?

 

In his book Life 3.0: Max Tegmark narrates an interesting story. He attended a symposium on artificial intelligence organized by the Swedish Nobel Foundation. There a panel of leading AI researchers was asked to define intelligence. They argued at length without reaching a consensus. He said it was quite funny: there’s no agreement on what intelligence is even among intelligent intelligence researchers! So there’s no undisputed “correct” definition of intelligence. Instead, there are many competing ones, including the ability for logic, understanding, planning, emotional knowledge, self-awareness, creativity, problem-solving, and learning. Exploring the future of intelligence, he suggests we take a broad and maximumly inclusive view that is, not limited to the sorts of intelligence that exist so far. Keeping that in mind he has come up with a broad definition: intelligence = ability to accomplish complex goals This is broad enough to include all the definitions that are conventionally accepted. 

 

Understanding, self-awareness, problem-solving, learning, etc. are all examples of complex goals that one might have. It’s also broad enough to subsume the Oxford Dictionary definition—“the ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skills”—since a goal can be to apply knowledge and skills. And because there can be many possible goals, there are many possible types of intelligence. Thus by our definition, it makes no sense to quantify the intelligence of humans, non-human animals, or machines by a single number such as an IQ.

 

What’s more intelligent: a computer program that can only play chess or one that can only play Go? There’s no sensible answer to this since they’re good at different things that can’t be directly compared. We can, however, say that a third program is more intelligent than both of the others if it’s at least as good as them at accomplishing all goals, and strictly better at at least one (winning at chess, say).  It also makes little sense to quibble about whether something is or isn’t intelligent in borderline cases, since ability comes on a spectrum and isn’t necessarily an all-or-nothing trait. 

 

Thus the advent of artificial intelligence (AI) has revolutionized our understanding of intelligence, challenging traditional definitions that were once rooted in human-centric abilities like reasoning, problem-solving, and creativity. AI systems such as machine learning models and neural networks demonstrate capabilities that rival or surpass human performance in specific tasks, such as pattern recognition, data analysis, and even creative outputs like composing music or writing.

 

Conventional definitions of intelligence often emphasize innate human traits such as logical reasoning, emotional understanding, and adaptive learning. However, AI has expanded the scope to include machine intelligence, which operates through algorithms and data processing rather than biological cognition. This shift has led to questions about the relevance of traditional criteria, as AI can exhibit forms of “intelligence” without consciousness, emotions, or subjective experiences.

 

For instance, IBM’s Watson can process vast amounts of information and provide accurate medical diagnoses, while OpenAI’s GPT models (like GPT-4) can generate human-like text and solve complex problems. Machines now perform tasks once thought to require uniquely human faculties, such as language comprehension, image recognition, and creative endeavors like composing music or generating art. These abilities prompt us to reconsider intelligence as a spectrum including human and artificial domains.  

 

Critics argue that AI lacks true understanding or consciousness, making its “intelligence” fundamentally different from human intelligence. AI systems excel at processing vast amounts of data, identifying patterns, and optimizing tasks, as they operate without intuition, empathy, or moral judgment. This dichotomy underscores the complexity of intelligence and reminds us of the qualities that make human cognition unique.

 

Nonetheless, the practical implications of AI’s capabilities have made traditional definitions appear insufficient for the modern age. Today, intelligence has increasingly become a multidimensional construct that transcends the boundaries of human cognition.  

 

My Evolving Relationship With Intelligence

 

Reflecting on my journey, I now see intelligence not as a fixed trait but as a dynamic interplay of strengths and weaknesses. The challenges I faced as a child—the late nights spent memorizing facts, and the anxiety of maintaining my academic reputation—taught me resilience and resourcefulness. They also instilled a deep appreciation for the diversity of human abilities.

 

Today, I no longer see intelligence as something to be measured or compared. Instead, I view it as a spectrum of capabilities that manifest differently in each individual. Whether it’s the analytical rigor of a scientist, a painter’s artistic vision, or a caregiver’s empathetic understanding, intelligence takes countless forms, each valuable in its own right.

 

 Conclusion: Embracing a Broader Definition

 

The journey to understand intelligence is far from over. As our world becomes increasingly interconnected and technology advances, we may encounter new paradigms and challenges that can reshape our understanding of this elusive concept.

 

Thus, intelligence is not about fitting into a predefined mold or meeting external expectations. It is about recognizing and cultivating the unique gifts that each of us brings to the table. And perhaps most importantly, it is about using those gifts to enrich not only our own lives but also the lives of others.

    If you take out emotional intelligence out of AI then u get intelligence minus ability to discern between right and wrong, good and evil.How do you incorporate ethics in AI ?
    that’s one setup which makes us human humane. Imagine scenario when u need to settle sibling squabble 😁 well written article Sir.this shows wider aspects of intelligence from different perspectives
